The Jim Clark Memorial Fund
A fund has been established to design, build and maintain a new Memorial to Jim Clark at Hockenheim, marking the 40th anniversary of his fatal accident at the circuit on 7th April 1968.
When the Grand Prix circuit was revised in 2002, the original stone cross was moved to a new position by the first corner of the new circuit. It's a simple setting but one that over the years has become increasingly untidy and not really befitting Jim's memory.
A new Memorial has been designed by Jim's friend and mentor Ian Scott-Watson and approval gained from Hockenheim to site it at the same spot. There will be back panels made of green slate with gold lettering listing Jim's achievements.
The original cross will be mounted on a base, also made of green slate, and the Memorial will be surrounded by a small garden with two information boards - in English and German - showing details of Jim's career.
The Memorial will be dedicated at this year's Jim Clark Revival meeting at Hockenheim on 26th-27th April 2008.
The total cost of the new Memorial is likely to amount to £10,000 and an appeal has been launched to raise this amount. It will also be necessary to set aside funds for future maintenance and upkeep.
The Memorial project has the strong support of Clive Chapman from Classic Team Lotus, Warren King from the Lotus Association, Alan Morgan of Club Lotus and the Jim Clark Film Festival organisers, Michael Oliver and Gary Critcher.
